September 9, 2003   Tradeline, Inc.

The Buildings for Science team of Art's Way Scientific, Inc. recently completed a modular research complex of BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory space at the University of Florida. The design, production, and installation of this world-class research facility in less than one year was critical to the retention of a leading University of Florida research investigator. The complex includes BSL-2 (Bio Safety Level-2), laboratory space and BSL-3 laboratory with support rooms. The complex has it's own mechanical room area, an office-break area with vending machine, a unisex bathroom-change area, a pass-through shower into the BSL-3 laboratory with accommodating locker space, and two separate procedure areas. Temperature, humidity, and lighting are controlled centrally and can be accessed with computer technology from within the complex or remotely from the investigator's lap top computer. The building BAS (Building Automation System) was supplied by Automated Logic Controls, a leader in building automation and monitoring.

HEPA filters are installed and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is designed to filter 100% of the exhaust, protecting surroundings from any particles from inside the facility, with no recirculation at 15-20 air changes per hour. The HVAC system was designed to allow the user to have both BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories in the same building. The airflow from room to room will assure that hot subjects do not contaminate the Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) subjects. The building has redundant HEPA filters for the BSL3 side for added security and safety. The building meets or exceeds all requirements for full AAALAC Accreditation.

Modular laboratories are meeting many needs in biocontainment and animal laboratory research. A modular lab can serve as a BSL-3 lab for a mail room or mail sorting facility. Vivarium facilities can be modular animal housing laboratories. Modular labs meet needs for clean rooms in nanotechnology applications and vaccine production. Manufactured buildings are a form of accelerated construction providing a turnkey laboratory.
